When I first came into recovery, dealing with high-stress situations was a little messy, to say the least. Even now, when I find myself feeling like I can’t control a situation, I tend to automatically go into panic mode. I’m so thankful for the staff here at SafeHope Home because they are usually able to talk me down from a crisis and guide me in the right direction.
When trauma survivors are presented with stressful situations, it may be common for them to catastrophize. Using my own experiences as examples, catastrophizing may look like: feelings of abandonment when calls are not returned or fear of not having enough basic necessities. Trying to separate trauma responses from reality can get pretty exhausting. This is why I feel it is so important to have a strong and patient support network around you.
While having a support network is great, I also understand that not everybody has one. This is why it’s also important to build coping skills, and if you’re really struggling, being open to calling helplines such as The Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline (1-833-900-1010) or Crisis Service Canada (1-833-456-4566). These helplines are put in place to help, so never feel ashamed of using them. I’ve used them a couple of times myself.
Unfortunately, stressful situations are just a part of life but there are ways that we can get through them. I hope you found this blog post helpful in some way. Always know that there is support out there. Sometimes it just takes a little extra looking to find it.
